Empowering the Barbie Way:Unveiling Leadership Lessons from the Iconic Doll

Did you consider that beyond her iconic fashion appeal, Barbie also holds powerful leadership lessons that can empower and inspire us all?

After watching the Barbie movie, I’ve been pondering how Barbie captured the imagination and hearts of generations since 1959. What’s the appeal?

Initially, I wasn’t even interested in watching the move, however, I decided to put my coaching hat on and ask: what lessons can we learn from this toy that became a global symbol of empowerment, diversity and positive social impact?

Together, let’s explore the connection between Barbie and Leadership— and unveil invaluable leadership lessons hidden within the iconic doll's enduring legacy. Please share your thoughts and take-aways from the movie from your lens and perspective. I love to hear from you!

  • Embracing Authenticity: Just like Barbie, who has evolved over the years to represent various professions and backgrounds, authentic leadership calls for embracing our true selves. By leading with authenticity, we create a positive impact on our teams and foster an environment of trust and genuine connection.

  • Diversity and Inclusion: Barbie's diverse representation reminds us of the importance of inclusivity in leadership. Celebrating diversity within our teams cultivates creativity, innovation, and a harmonious work culture where every voice is heard and valued.

  • Empowering Others: Barbie has always encouraged children to dream big and pursue their passions without limits. Effective leaders empower their teams by providing guidance, opportunities for growth, and an unwavering belief in their capabilities.

  • Resilience and Growth: Just like Barbie faces challenges on her journey, leaders encounter obstacles too. Resilient leaders navigate uncertainties with grace, inspire adaptability, and encourage their teams to learn from setbacks and grow stronger.

  • Leading with Vision: Barbie's determination to embrace her uniqueness and follow her dreams aligns with visionary leadership. Leaders with a clear vision inspire their teams to work cohesively towards shared goals, creating a brighter future for all.

  • Empathy in Leadership: Barbie's journey of self-discovery emphasizes the value of empathy in leadership. Empathetic leaders understand their team members' emotions, perspectives, and needs, fostering a compassionate and supportive work environment.

Barbie’s influence reaches far beyond the toy isle…Her legacy continues to inspire and empower generations worldwide. There’s more to the movie obviously, this is through one lens only- I may have more to say about it as I continue to contemplate. The many layers for inquiry is a pleasant surprise!

And for those of you in my Awareness in Leadership summer intensive, these points may sound familiar as we’ve been exploring how embodying similar qualities can elevate our own leadership journeys and quest for powerful, positive change. We’ll continue explore awareness in leadership in October and you’re invited to join me this fall.

Lastly, “You can be anything you want to be, as long as you never give up on yourself.” -Barbie
